History of Osteopathy
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, or Osteopathy, is a form of medicine that dates back to the late 1800s. At a time when even antibiotics weren’t yet available, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still was looking for a better way than conventional medicine to treat his own family’s health problems.
Dr. Still found a connection between the musculoskeletal system and the function of the body, where better structure seemed to lead to a higher level of functioning. He undertook an intense study of anatomy and started using manipulations (manual medicine) to treat his patients. He termed it Osteopathy.
Over time, Osteopathic Medicine has evolved to include full medical and surgical rights, as the training is very similar to Allopathic Medicine (MDs). Today Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) specialize in all fields from surgery, to psychiatry, to anesthesiology. However, some, like Dr. Suarez, choose to master Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and integrate this into their philosophy and practice.
